In the Shadows Beyond This World: Chapter 3: Martyr Complex

Another day, another chapter. Perhaps I can get another chapter done tonight! But first, some errands.

Here’s hoping Link doesn’t come across like this! Although I like the comment “Actually it depends on how you view the games, so Power and Wisdom may give bonuses right then and there, while Courage [eventually] turns you into a god-forged killing machine.”

Chapter 3: Martyr Complex

Dawn was breaking as Link checked his gear. His sword and shield were firmly belted to his back, the Ocarina and his wallet were mysteriously in a pouch at his waist, his lantern was hooked beside that, his boots were securely strapped around his legs, his chainmail wasn’t going to chafe, and his hat was on his head.

Then he saw a pair of lights bobbing through the forest, and a fast-moving shadow, and he braced himself for impact.

He wasn’t disappointed. Rana flung herself at him, laughing, and he staggered back a pace before he held her steady. “You’re back!”

“I am!” he said, matching her infectious grin. “I – you – I still can’t believe you’re alive.”

“You know, neither can I. But if the Goddesses could pull a… what was it Zelda called it? A deus ex machina on all of Hyrule, it’s not really a problem to pull it on one or two people. I’m not the only one who lived… You know that House of Skultula? The Goddesses cured them too. And I’m sure there were others. But anyway. Oh my gosh! You’re real!” She reached up to touch his face with trembling fingers.

He grinned, pulled her close, and kissed her. Continue reading

In the Shadows Beyond This Word: Chapter 2: Reunions

This chapter perhaps not so good. I’m not sure. But I think it’s better than before, although it does combine a lot of the chapters from the previous version. I know Link doesn’t talk a lot, but it’s a bit frustrating having him not being able to talk at all. I guess that’s my talkative nature, though! (Hint: I’m a lot like Rana, except I have different neuroses and wasn’t trained by ninjas.) Part of my frustration also comes from the fact that I don’t like describing things that happened in the game, in cutscenes. Either it’s not really that important (Ordona emerging from her pool) or my writing skills can’t sum up the awesome enough (Link discovering he’s in human form again). Although I’ve been up all night writing this. When I edit it, I’ll probably be able to make that last bit more awesome.

I did some reading on the Zelda Wiki about the official Timeline for the Zelda games, and it’s kind of depressing! Especially the differing fates of Ocarina Link. I kind of prefer my own headcanon. Which I guess is why it’s my headcanon. Also I’m really not sure I can accept Spirit Tracks into my headcanon in the first place. Maybe yes, maybe no. It’s difficult just accepting that Old Hyrule was destroyed in Wind Waker, you know? Hyrule can’t be GONE-gone. It’s like, the life of this entire land only lasted a few thousand years, from its (second) settlement after Skyward Sword to its submersion and eventual destruction in Wind Waker. Can’t it go on forever? I know there were periods of darkness and war in Hyrule’s history, but that’s what the Heroes are for, is to stop the darkness. And sometimes they don’t get a happy ending (the Hero who took on the Shadow Tribe comes to mind) but often they do, because they go through blood, sweat, and tears to banish the evilness trying to take over Hyrule and they kind of deserve it (a happy ending). Basically I have too many feels for the Zelda series and its handsome hero and its lovely land. And also I can’t deal with three timelines at once, that’s just weird.

Man, I think I might have stayed up a mite too long. That last paragraph is rather formless.

Also, having watched Skyward Sword, I think in that game Link was able to physically acquire the Triforce and use it not just because it’s super awesome and about time it was actually featured in a Zelda game besides the first one, but also because there is a Triforce of good characters. Link and Zelda are there, sure, but there’s also Groose, and for the first time, we have a Power good guy. It’s kind of awesome.

In the Shadows Beyond This World: Chapter 1: Return from Exile

Kay. Chapter 1. If you check the writing page, you’ll see that I’ve got the chapters all planned out, though some of the chapter titles might change. So I’m hoping this goes pretty quick. Having realized that writing characters interact is most fun for me, this story is probably going to be less action-packed, despite its subject matter, than I would normally do, because I’m not forcing myself to write action scenes everywhere. However, hopefully when there are action scenes, they’ll be boss, because Link deserves it. : D

I have discovered I can roast marshmallows on a fork over a candle. :3 This pleases me.

I think there’s a quote from Castle in the Sky in the Twilight Princess soundtrack. Not sure if it’s on purpose, or even who the quotation is connected to in the TP soundtrack. I think it’s vaguely associated with one or two tracks that are about either Ilia or Midna. I wasn’t really paying attention. EDIT: I mean a musical quote. Not a text quote. That wouldn’t make sense.

Monster colour

Ahhh! I can't stand this colour scheme!

Ahhh! I can’t stand this colour scheme!

This is another Photoshop colouring experiment that I did one day – can’t remember when. I started with the head and went from there. I soon found that the hands of the original were not very helpful… it was a struggle to get them to look half-decent and in the end I think I just redrew them. Tunic skirt looks pathetic, but the torso looks quite good. Too bad it’s obscured by the blubbery tentacle thing. Took me a while to figure out how to make it transparent in the way that I wanted it to be. Navi came out well. The background was a lazy cop-out, but hey, I didn’t use a reference in the first place so I just did something more interesting than blank walls.

Hun, your head is still balloon-shaped…

So, this is the follow-up to my earlier picture here. This one is not as good as the first one. Bits of body are shaped better, but a lot of it is shaped worse. Rana’s eyes are reeeaaaally weird. I like her ankles but the rest of her is even more awful than the last time. She’s too small, too. Link has somewhat more detail, except on lower arms and legs, than last time, and his face is at least recognizable…

Silly kitten hurt her foot…

This is a picture, obviously, of Link, Rana, and Saria (sans fairies). They’re returning home to Kokiri Village from a long day of playing in the Lost Woods, where Rana hurt her foot. Again, I can’t do perspective too well, and I didn’t use a reference for Saria. So that’s why she’s not wearing her cute little green boots. Link turned out the best again, but still looks funny.

Link and Rana

Sweetheart, your head is shaped like a balloon...

Sweetheart, your head is shaped like a balloon…

Hello and greetings! This was a quick sketch of Link and Rana… it wouldn’t have been so quick if it had turned out right. Anyway, I started with Link’s head, and it turned out GREAT. Izzenee handsome? The rest of both of them, not so well. Perspective was not my strong point, and it still isn’t, to a large degree… Rana’s body is okay, althoug she looks a bit too skinny, or maybe a lot, and her tunic doesn’t sit right, and her head is not so good because, again, of perspective. I have the nagging feeling that I almost got it, that if I just change a few lines and move her features over a tad, it would be perfect. But I don’t know how. As you’ll see later, I tried again, and this time it was marginally better but Link’s face was not so good. I should point out that they’re wearing their clothes from the Twilight Princess period.

Link with a hood

Creepy young man... <o_O>

Creepy young man…

Hmmm… I was trying to practice both cloth and facial structure. I’m not sure I succeeded, since Link looks more like any sullen young Japanese man than, uh, himself, and his ears did something funny to his hood… Not a terrible picture, but not one I’m particularly proud of either.
