Devil’s Due: Part 37: Ascension

I’m actually surprised that a few people weren’t sure which companion Murlesson was going to pick to keep and which to put in the Rakata box, I thought it was pretty obvious. ; )

Turns out this is the second-last chapter after all because I always underestimate how long social scenes are going to go. ONE MORE I PROMISE

Part 36: Darth Nox

Part 37: Ascension

Thanaton’s body was unmoving where it sprawled, his presence was well and truly snuffed out. The final explosion of his soul had not done much damage, only sweeping a hot, bitter wind over everyone. Murlesson let himself float to the ground and nearly staggered from weariness, as he capped his internal wellspring, pulling his aura back in close – though he wasn’t as careful as usual, what was the point? The whirlwind of rubble collapsed unceremoniously, and the dark swirling clouds overhead dissipated like they’d never been. Continue reading

Devil’s Due: Part 36: Darth Nox

Soundtracks for this chapter: Scene one gets a blend of two of the best soundtracks from Corpse Party, The Nightmare of the School Years (which I used before but it’s still good) and Chapter 5’s Main Theme. But the final fight is upon us! I’ve used so many different tracks for this fight I have a whole playlist just for this one fight. The first one on there was The Stains of Time from MGR (for some reason I’ve always felt like that was the most edgey teenage boy song on the OST), which in a way was a callback to the very first soundtrack of this story, from the very first chapter, being I’m My Own Master Now also from MGR. Then over time the playlist also expanded to include Angel of the Dark by Aviators as a callback to when Murlesson first showed power and mysticism in public (although in this scene it actually goes at the end), and then Change the World by Man With a Mission, and finally a song which I think is called something about ParadiseLost (Belial Avatar BGM) from Granblue Fantasy (I felt “let me feel the power that could rip me to shreds” was a pretty appropriate chorus line!). I hope it lives up to the hype I’ve built!

Part 35: Paradigm

Part 36: Darth Nox

Bursting through the door down from the roof, he nearly crashed into Revel. “Had a fight with Shara, huh?”

“Shut up,” Murlesson growled, storming past him at a run. “I don’t have time. She’s in trouble.”

“So you’re going to rescue her anyway, of course,” Revel said, turning to jog after him. “She’s really got you wrapped around her finger.”

Murlesson turned, eyes raw and blazing. “Don’t you talk about either of us like that.”

“Hey, don’t worry about it,” Revel said. “I’m surprised you haven’t had more fights-“ Continue reading

Devil’s Due: Part 32: Battle of Wits

This one took a while… not only was the actual writing complicated and challenging (and I went for a round of beta-reading just to be sure it makes sense, which was the best idea), I had been working on my Halloween cosplay and playing the other four SWTOR routes that I didn’t play when I first tried the game five years ago. I’m pleasantly surprised, they were all pretty enjoyable. Warrior is still my favourite overall, but Bounty Hunter is up there with Smuggler for entertainment value. Meanwhile, I had to restart Agent three times in Act 1 though until I found a set of decisions that I was happy with. It’s just really not comfortable playing a hardcore KGB officer, you know? And it’s much more fun if you put on the Ghost in the Shell OST. Anyway, my personal tier list is probably: Consular < Trooper/Knight < Agent/Inquisitor < Bounty Hunter/Smuggler < Warrior.

That being said, I need a break from the game and its terrible awful no-fun gameplay. I do want to ask if it would be worth getting into… the entire rest of SWTOR, as I vaguely remember playing Ilum once four years ago and that’s as far as I’ve gone. And if it’s possible while still maintaining my stance of boycotting EA financially. But it’s going to be a while before I feel like slogging through more terrible boring pointless mob-infested maps, so don’t expect any sequels in the near future even if I do decide to play more. Devil’s Due: Part 29: Don’t Forget Me

Now this chapter I’ve been waiting years to write. Soundtracks: general mood is Corpse Party (one of the best tracks on the OST imo), I used If by Ayane for Ashara’s determined charge, and I can finally, finally bust out the main theme song! WHOO LET’S F-ING GO, LET’S DO THIS, BABY

Part 28: Madness

Part 29: Don’t Forget Me

Ashara tried to will the elevator to go faster, only one thing on her mind – to catch up with Murlesson and… and… She wanted to beat the ghosts out of him, but how could she do that? If it were so easy, Murlesson would have done it a long time ago. He was much cleverer than she was, after all. Her heart hurt, her eyes hurt, she wanted to scream and cry and collapse in despair.

Logically, there was nothing to be done. Zash had looked, and Ashara and Drellik had helped her look, and they’d all found nothing about unbinding Force ghosts or curing the malevolent effects of possession by Force ghosts. Logically, Murlesson was gone, practically already dead, and the ghosts were all that was left. Continue reading

Devil’s Due: Part 28: Madness

OMG I wrote a chapter!?!?!? One of the chapters I’ve been looking forward to writing for a long time, too. : ) But I had to rewrite it at least twice; I was going to write it from Ashara’s point of view and got four pages in before I realized it didn’t work. That, not to mention being a little burned out from the winter’s intense writing and afraid of failure, meant that I didn’t start writing this until Camp Nanowrimo started at the beginning of April last week, and my word count has been very conservative by my standards.

This chapter’s theme is Sacred Worlds by Blind Guardian! I was asking Aristheron’s player what kind of apocalyptic music he could suggest and I settled on this one. I love it! So orchestral, such heavy percussion, so much vocal emotion.

I assume paratroopers exist in Star Wars, but I’ve never seen any evidence of it. So I have no idea how paratrooping technology might work in this time period in this galaxy, but I’m using it anyway because I think it’s cool.

Part 27: Her Wounds

Part 28: Madness

After sending Murlesson to bed and briefing Clay and Pyron, Aristheron sank onto the cot in the Viper’s medical bay and tried not to wince. He’d been pummelled harshly in his fight with Giri, and he was expecting more of the same on the morrow – though, hopefully, with fewer walls. But right now, he needed to get kolto on as many of his injuries as possible. The Force had shielded him from the worst of it, but still his back was harshly bruised, his left arm was speckled with shrapnel from where his coat had been shredded over his bicep, and one of his ribs had been cracked for sure. He’d managed to keep his head high through all the excitement of escaping, showing no signs of weakness in either demeanour or spirit, and now at last he could soften slightly. But not enough to wince. Continue reading

Devil’s Due: Part 27: Her Wounds

Warnings: drugs, depression, sexy times (I’ve never read any of the official Star Wars published accounts of people on glitterstim so that spot may be inaccurate) (also yes I’m a sheltered middle-class person so it’s probably gratuitous anyway)

This is actually the second time I’ve posted this; I had thought it was done, and then I started writing the fourth chapter of this arc and decided it had gone a bit ridiculous. Which bothers me as the whole reason I started writing this fic was because I felt BioWare had gone a bit ridiculous. Everything’s mostly the same in this version except the action scene is swapped out for a better one. If you had the misfortune of reading the previous version, please scrub it from your memory! I apologize for the initial lack of quality. Sometimes you have to write the wrong story before you find the right one, but I shouldn’t have uploaded the wrong one.

And the second posting’s taken so long because January was a month of Mondays, as they say, and I was half dead of stress hahaha. Finally scraped the spoons together to get the revision done. And then proceeded to wait some more until I got my teeth into the last chapter just to make sure I hadn’t screwed it up in a different way. (Fingers crossed that I don’t have to change too much from now!) I’m doing much better but the writing is still slow going. Continue reading

Devil’s Due: Part 25: A Dying World

Believe it or not, Aristheron was the one who got me into Disturbed (also David Draiman kind of sounds like the Sith Warrior male voice? Maybe I’m just imagining it). Aristheron’s music playlist is pretty all over the place, but the selections all add up to an uncompromising warrior whose indomitable prowess is only matched by his nobility of spirit, a dark knight who is yet a good person. I believe his new armour set is the Heavy Exoskeletal Warsuit. I managed to dig up my old screenshots from our playthrough together (back on my old laptop that couldn’t handle good graphics lol). He’s a handsome fellow, isn’t he?

His original theme was The Vengeful One, and his romance theme with Vany is The Light. At some point he acquired Wake the White Wolf, and he can also make use of Indestructible, Ten Thousand Against One (please to ignore terrible music video), and one more that I’m saving.

The chase scene in this chapter was written to Corpse Party: Unavoidable Tragedy (or Tradegy, as the video spells it >.>)

Part 24: Unnecessary Melodrama

Part 25: A Dying World

“Well, that’s dramatic,” Murlesson said. “Elaborate, please.” Continue reading

Devil’s Due: Part 13: Historical Destroyer

Ah, a slow, self-indulgent chapter, considering there is NO main story quest in it at all lol. Hope you like Ashara! I realize they wouldn’t put all this slow resource management and development in an action rpg, but I’m making use of it because I think way too much about logistics in stories. And then, oops, an action scene showed up out of nowhere. Do you think it’s too big? I kind of wanted it to be shorter.

I did a bit of a dumb a few days ago; I stayed up late reading the MOST AMAZING Rurouni Kenshin/Star Wars fanfic ever; but the upshot of it was “I need to consider the Force ambience more” because the author makes it seem so effortless how the Force-users see through the Force as naturally as with their eyes, so I went back and edited all the previous chapters in a tiny way (I don’t have the energy to do a big rework right now).

Listened to a lot of Disturbed writing this! I have two new CDs and they make good background music, though I’m planning to use some of it more thematically later…

Part 12: The Maiden and the Assassins

Chapter 13: Historical Destroyer

Maliss’s smirk widened into a smug grin as Murlesson dismounted the speeder bike, Ashara following him. “Excellent. Truly remarkable. My lord, you are utterly clever and resourceful. You turned the Jedi!”

This could get complicated very quickly if he didn’t shut it down. “If this is what it looks like, you should know that you’re not going to live very long.” Continue reading

Devil’s Due: Part 11: Into the Shadows

Why yes hello I also write about emo Sith bois once in a while (wow it’s been a whole year!)

I’ve been having a rough start to the fall so I figured why not channel my wild mood swings and general depression into something that benefits from negativity? So here we go, let’s crank the Corpse Party OST and plumb the dark depraved depths of BioWare’s garbage writing!

This chapter was one of the most important ones for giving the Inquisitor back some agency. In the game, they just run off at Thanaton’s order, almost get killed, and then Grandpa shows up to save them and yell at them for being stupid when the player isn’t allowed any other choice? I don’t like that. If BioWare’s pretending I’m playing a cunning, scheming character, that’s bad writing. I also don’t like getting scraped off the floor by Kaal and Corrin because the Inquisitor was too dumb to plan any sort of escape route (in b4 anyone complains that there was no time to execute an escape route), even if I do like the part where the Inquisitor straight up dies-but-not (cockroach like). The confrontation wasn’t the worst writing ever, it was just lazy. So I’m adding some proper drama.

Researching ambiance; Thanaton show-down music!
