Elladan and Elrohir

The twin Sons of Elrond show their stuff

The twin Sons of Elrond show their stuff

swirly...

swirly…

I was given these two, the Sons of Elrond, for Christmas – but I don’t remember which Christmas. Anyway, here they are in all their mediocrely painted glory, and whichever the tabs on the bases say they are, they’re the opposite. I think Elrohir is the one in red. Yes, yes, he is. So Elladan is the one in yellow.

When I first started painting these guys, Elladan I base coated his tunic orange. That looked awful. Dad suggested brown. This was done using the Citadel paints, as we had acquired some in the interim between the Silver Helms and these. They were much easier to use, as I found the Tamiya rather watery. (Citadel is for those who want instant results) It was also Dad’s idea that the blades of the swords be plain metal, as these are metal miniatures. You’ll see this on probably every single metal model I get. I just sanded it, but due to inexperience I didn’t cover them when they were sprayed black (undercoat) so they needed to be sanded again, and it was a lot harder the second time! I also got some advice from various people about highlighting black hair, and some people suggested blue, because grey or white will make the hair look dark grey instead of black, but I think I did okay. Used Flesh Wash on the faces, and the first time Elladan looked “like he had a head wound” so most of his was removed and painted the layering way.

I really, really like Elrohir’s tunic.

Fingolfin vs. Morgoth

Prepare to die, obscure blob of doom!

Prepare to die, obscure blob of doom!

Uh… Fingolfin has dark hair! DARK hair! That’s all this picture is to prove. It’s terrible. But he has DARK hair!

Just annoyed at all the Rolozo Tolkien artists doing him with streaming golden locks. Blah. o_O7

I guess Morgoth’s hammer (“Grond, Grond, Grond”) isn’t too bad. Do you think the ‘glowy elf king’ look is a bit over the top? It didn’t come out even that well in the original – perhaps because the original was a full page, and this has been shrunk because I don’t really care about it. ^_^7 How about the glowy elf king horse? And why hasn’t it run away yet?

Heroes All (almost) II

Another large gathering of cool characters

Another large gathering of cool characters

Another version of Heroes All! With Lyn, too, because she’s so cool. The strange people here are (L-R) Mengil, who was an evil Warhammer Dark Elf who was rather handsome in the White Dwarf article about him. So now he’s a good guy because I say so. Then there’s Legolas, then Kusko, the skinny dude, and Kurama sitting on the ground, explaining botany to Jim from Treasure Planet and his rocket-powered skateboard, and then Sain is sitting on a stump, chatting with the two Hylians: Raven and Link III, and Sain’s taken off his hip-plates. And Lyn is posing because she’s good with a sword.

Glorfindel Leads Them to Rivendell

Glowiness of nobility

Glowiness of nobility

Glorfindel! And Asfaloth! Asfaloth doesn’t look as bad as my horses usually do. I still can’t draw horse chests. I should study sometime. I tried to make everything other than him and his horse dark so that he would stand out. He is supposed to have a sort of glow, I think. Like the elves in the Shire, where a faint light falls about their feet. Unfortunately, the shadow faded. Frodo came out well also, and look! It’s Aragorn! Wow! Sort of. Sam is the hobbit just behind him, Merry is the one behind Glorfindel, and Pippin is behind Asfaloth. I had trouble scanning this. It didn’t want to pick up Glorfindel’s arm or waist.

Elrond and Galadriel in the Shire

Lord and Lady of Rings

Lord and Lady of Rings

Elrond, the man himself! And Lady Galadriel!

… This proves that I cannot draw horses with any accuracy. Meh. Elrond’s actually had to wait two years before I tried drawing its legs, and it still didn’t come out.

Oh, well, Elrond’s face looks okay, and Galadriel looks actually quite stunning! I’m very proud of her hair, and the pretty flowers in it.

The Sons of Elrond

Few could tell them apart

Few could tell them apart

These are Elladan and Elrohir, and as I said if you wave your mouse over the picture, few could tell them apart. I certainly can’t. By Christmas I had miniatures of them, but the next batch of those I’ll be putting up are of someone else. Oooh. So the one on the left, I think, is Elrohir, and the one on the right is Elladan.

And while I’m at it, this picture marks the start of a new sketchbook.
