Whee!
This picture was inspired by the Enya song Lonships, which is perhaps her loveliest or second-loveliest song. The other one is Shepherd Moons, but this one is rather thrilling.
I like the kayaks.

Water, rocks, trees… perfect elf habitat
A Zela picture with Zela in it! How rare!
This was drawn on holiday at my former piano teacher’s fishing resort. My dad did a webpage for her so she gave us a free package. So we invited my grandparents over and we all went fishing. Mom and Grandma and I all went together for an afternoon, and the next day Dad and Grandpa and my brother all went. Also some orcas swam through, which meant that we weren’t catching much.
But this has nothing to do with drawing a picture. The picture comes from the fact that there is absolutely gorgeous scenery around that resort, perfect for Zela. So, I drew her and her husband in an area that looks remarkably like the bay outside my window. I like her tunic dress. Flair is so very short. I miscalculated the page. Blah. I still like the picture, even if the artwork itself is mediocre.
Woman? What woman? That’s just a bunch of seaweed!
This mermaid was drawn on the spur of the moment, trying to emulate a flowing, dreamy style that I did once before of a dryad and a swanlady and a peacock – all three in one being, connected to each other. So, in this, you can see the fish, perhaps, without the girl. Her hair and arms should look like seaweed, and I tried to give her face a bit of a haunting, otherworldly expression. Unfortunately, I don’t think my skills are quite up to that.
After some deliberation, I put this in Zela’s world. Why not mermaids? They can be shy secretive creatures if they don’t play a large role in the story, which I’m sure they won’t.
This picture is of Zela and Flaer dancing, and I drew it after watching a very romantic movie with lots of dancing: Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. I kind of like the artificial way that her dress swirls… Here I was going for the same kind of tall slenderness that I got in the first picture, but it didn’t work as well, especially with Flaer because he’s not wearing a robe, he’s wearing a tunic-ish shirt thing. Whatever them medieval-type folks wore. As you can see, he now has long black hair, and they are the exact same height.
Dancing is an important part of Flaer and Zela’s relationship.
Pillars of trees
Another Zela picture! This time, I went for setting rather than character, and this picture is much better than I expected.
This picture was inspired, as began to happen more and more frequently, by music: La cathedral engloutie, par Debussy. Someone I knew played it at a masterclass, and I was enthralled… so pretty……..
Anyway, so, as well as imagining a weed-draped stone structure with light filtering down from above, and water gushing out as it rises, I also imagined a great hall of glass and stone trees for pillars, and as the sun sets, it falls full on two thrones at one end (in this picture, out of sight on the right), illuminating two figures sitting there: Flar and Stria! Stria is one incarnation, at least, of Flair’s mother.
The little words and the arrow pointing to the girl say ‘scale figure’. My brother says he thinks it’s a good picture!
Rahr! Eee!
Today’s picture is of a dragon. She seems to be designed based on a Lego dragon, and I think she looks pretty cool. She was a scatterbrained minor character while we were ‘roleplaying’ – we didn’t call it that, but that’s what we were doing. I drew an extra tail design for her. She’s also a green dragon, which brings the Lego element even more into the picture, although now I call them emeralds, along with scarlet, gold, silver, and marine dragons… those last would be blue, but I can’t think of a ‘better’ name for them. Anyway, that was just brainstormed a couple of days ago. Zela’s dragon-friend is silver, I know that.
Zela’s first look
This is my first picture of Zela, my first really original character. It’s so old, it’s on scrap paper without a date and I almost couldn’t find it again in my folder of ‘really old elf stuff’. This was drawn somewhere around 2001, I think. I did remember that it existed, and I wanted it to be the first here. She’s evolved a lot since then! Still, this is the first picture of her, so it’s special. I still try to get the tall slim look I achieved here, even if I’m much more advanced everywhere else (it’s the leaning tower of Zela!). I draw short legs unless they’re hidden by a long skirt, so that is my problem.
