“Children” WIP 2

WIP 2

Some progress. You’ll notice the clouds are completely different from last time. That’s right, I completely redid them again. I still have a few tweaks to make, but things are better. Also I added shiny to the armour. You can’t see it at this resolution but I’m happy with the horns on his helmet. Maybe tomorrow I’ll finish Tseo. Then for the hard part – Hoarwilk.

EDIT: Better, neh? More limbs attached.

Yay for movie soundtracks! I’ve been listening to both How to Train Your Dragon (on YouTube until the CD I ordered comes in) and Treasure Planet. Makes me want to watch them. Yes, I like Treasure Planet, shut up.

Now I’m going to go watch the Narnia movies. For real this time. EDIT: Spent so long on Tseo I didn’t. Argh. They’re due tomorrow and I have a recital to play in.

“Children” WIP

WIP 1

Here’s what I worked on today! It took me a long time to do clouds. First I tried doing it in Corel Painter, but for one thing I only have the Painter 4 and also my computer is slow so the whole process was not terribly successful. I ended up with a lovely impressionistic background, but… that’s not really good enough for clouds. I should learn to draw clouds on my own, because here I’m just using the Photoshop Cloud Brush that I found in the back of my Digital Art magazine.

I think it needs more yellow. It’s not warm enough yet.

Tomorrow I will finish Tseo’s basecolours and start shading; Hoarwilk I won’t start for a while. I want to check on drawing dragons. I notice that NeonDragon tends to draw her scaley-dragon noses all the same way and it’s not quite what I’m going for. Research time!

EDIT: Since even these clouds don’t look like what I have in my head, I’m scrapping them and starting AGAIN. : )

“Maybe the children of a lesser god…”

This picture is inspired by “Kings and Queens” by the band 30 Seconds to Mars, and it is a most excellent song. It has a good baseline. Anyway, here’s Tseo on Hoarwilk his dragon, soaring through the clouds together. Go listen to it and look again!

Note to self – obtain the NeonDragon book about drawing humanoid characters. Also practice with the dragon character book.

This will be painted at some point! Hopefully I can do a wispy painty painting and tell you that that’s how the original looks where it is slapped on some wall at the Dragonland castle. <3

Some notes on why the picture is the way it is: all the sapient creatures in the Adhemlenei are ridden bare-back. If you think this looks uncomfortable, what with Hoarwilk’s backbonespikes, well, they deal with it. Also, you may notice that Hoarwilk has rather human-like paws, whereas Silver in the book cover does not so much. This is on purpose. Silver comes from a family that has fairly cat-like paws; Hoarwilk (who is gold, by the way) has more lizard-like toes. Also Hoarwilk has cheek fins and no head-horns.

Dragons with head-horns: Silver, Lumi (you don’t know him yet), Kirstril’s partner (I don’t know him yet!), Shlaes’ partner.

Dragons without head-horns: Craegaarhck, Hoarwilk.

Dragonland Trio

The big three of the Dragonland; Kirstril, Shlaes, and Tseo. Shlaes is in the back, with the poofy white hair. Kirstril in the front with the messy black hair. Tseo over on the right, in one of his longer-hair phases. I like how Kirstril came out.

Y’know, my ScriptFrenzy script is not going so well. I really don’t know how to make it interesting. They say “Make the hero awesome, then make him suffer. Make him (or her, really; I still don’t know if the heroine should be the protagonist) want something really badly and then put obstacles in his/her way. Also make the bad guy interesting and relatable.” …I guess my hero isn’t awesome enough yet because I keep worrying about what RedLetterMedia said in their Star Wars II review: “Just coz you put obstacles in a romance don’t mean we’ll care about it.”

I’ve had too much advice and not enough inspiration. Anyone want to kick me into pushing through to the next part?

I know the climax will be great. Edmund gets to shoot somebody. But how they get there I have no cluuueeee…

These are some of the reasons I decided not to write the Dragonland script. I don’t wanna write something boring, and I don’t know Kirstril well enough to trust his charisma to push me through to the end (sexy as he is in this picture).

Tseo

Whoa! New character again? Not quite. This is Akalion Tseo, whom we last saw for the first time in this picture. I had a very vivid dream this afternoon (while adjusting to the time change) and in it was a blondie named Tseo. I remembered that very well for some reason. In the dream he was a Fire Emblem character, but whatever. He’s a Dragonlander knight now. Continue reading

The Edge of Silverlake

kirstrilsnow

Whoa, hey, new characters! Or at least ones I’ve never drawn before in all the Adhemlenei! And in pencil! Bet you didn’t miss that medium, did you! This is Kirstril, the future King of the Dragonlanders, and his wife Shlaes, and his best buddy who is so far nameless but who will be the first future Dragon Knight. Pretty cool, huh? And they’ve gone out wandering alone away from their camp, and so they are the first three to reach the edge of the frozen Silverlake. And it’s winter. Silly kalmaei.

I drew this yesterday and Kirstril is such a cutie I want to keep drawing him. He has blue eyes and wispy, dark brown hair. His wife is deceptively dark-haired in this picture; she has white hair like clouds. I really should find out definitively what Flar looks like. Because I don’t actually know.

I have been working on a timeline for the Adhemlenei. I already subtly adjusted a few birthdates in the bios; if you can’t tell, I’m not telling you which. I still don’t have a decent motivation for the plot, but I have already had the idea that I should tell the beginning of the story from Flar’s POV, and then Flaer’s, and then finally Flairé’s. Three generations’ look at Zela and the world around them. (Because Zela is stupidly hard to write for. Still. After a whole decade of living together. : P  That stubborn woman.) We’ll see how that goes for this year’s NaNoWriMo. Looking at things from Flar and Flaer’s POV will really let me show how they are great leaders, because they haven’t really acted like it yet. Or how they are not such good leaders as everyone thinks and it’s only habit that puts them in charge, even though they really are the best available for the job. : P Whatever.
