Rewriting, Part 2

Just thought I’d give you an update on the rewrite… I finally figured out where I should start the story – and it eliminates some of the problems I was having previously. If you ever read the beginning of the last draft, this story starts… two weeks before the fateful tournament of doomly deathy doom, and goes from there. There may be flashbacks, but I’ve been warned that flashbacks are cop-outs – more so in movie-writing, but even in novels too. But I don’t think it will be a problem if I use it sparingly. After all, the only things I could possibly flash back to would be the angels or Flaer’s courtship, and that stuff wasn’t that interesting anyway, although parts were important.

I just keep remembering – every bit of material that gets cut from later drafts is stuff that helps me establish who is what and where; history, personality, everything comes in handy whether it gets used or not. Which is very encouraging (which is good because I’ve restarted like six times already this week. This time looks good, though).

Example: Gyoriing is a third-generation (which threw me for a bit of a loop when I first re-read that… I mean, Flairé is third-generation! Through his dad, anyway.) and I found out what his grandfather’s name is – Kafrinon, which means Targeter. This name may change, but I like the meaning. He’s Flar’s buddy and on the council and while responsible to a fault likes to tease mercilessly. He was the first general of the Moonland, until he got his leg amputated by accident, and then his son was an artist so his son, Gyoriing, became the next general. Also because Gyoriing is awesooome. And older than an lot of second-generation anyway, because his parents and grandparents married relatively early. His mom is still waiting for her son to marry Layalin and give her grandkids, though.

Also Flaer was adoooorable when he was a baby. (Well, most kids are…)

This was all determined sometime between Tuesday and now. Whee!

I’m also debating what to do about the ‘Lost Boys’. I think finding them simultaneously in different places is too unbelievable. I’m going to do something much more sensible. …So now their finding makes more sense… but their losing still needs work. Away!

Anyway, one thing you must definitely do while waiting for me to update is check out the finished cover!!!! Can’t wait to see that gorgeous piece of art on the outside of this thing.

Ctrl+J is fab.

Tweaks coming tomorrow. And additions.

Can YOU name everyone here?

EDIT: Check the characters page! It is now covered in chibis. Except for the last four characters (Evylyin+Dymunde, Lyra, Lakia, and Cassandra) because I don’t consider them important enough. Comment if you disagree.

And I found a way that’s easier than Ctrl+J to make transparencies. lol.

EDIT 2: I tweaked a few of the chibis on the character page. Marteth’s head looks a little less like a football (still not ideal, though), Anne’s wing is the proper size, Jalril’s eyes are golden, and a few other colour changes. Cheers!

D'awww!

Gyoriing and Layalin

drawn

(629)

This is Sir Gyoriing and Princess Layalin, who are madly in love with each other. Whenever I draw these two, something doesn’t go right.

“But Jen”, I hear you say, “this is obviously only your second time at drawing them together, and the mistakes made are so obvious you will easily refrain from them in a third attempt.”

Well yes, I reply, but what mistakes shall I make then? But the way to better drawing is through practice, which I have not got. Anyway, I am happy with the hair and the clothes, even if the faces and proportions are shot.

That’s all the art I have for a while, but I am working on getting more for you! If I can tear myself away from all these video games, I have lots of Ephraim’s story ready to write (I said that before, no?) and I really really want to make some colour art because this stuff is kind of hard to look at for ages on end. How do the pros make such nice pencil art? : P

EDIT: I finished Moby Dick today! I now know more about whaling through the eyes of strange poets than I ever wanted to. Bah. The end was actually interesting. Before that, well, we have bits of story mixed in with EVERYTHING MELVILLE EVER THOUGHT ABOUT WHALES EVER. 8O Now I just have to finish my Philosophy course, and learn my music. Think I can do it? :|

Also.

Silence pervades the edge of the tournament ground where our protagonists are.

Finally! A picture I’m REALLY REALLY happy with! In the foreground, on the left, is Prince Flaer, looking grim, with his helmet and shield at his feet and standing on the roots of a much better than usual tree. See, this kind of success is what keeps me from drawing things with a reference, because sometimes I do things that I’m happy with and then I feel I don’t need to look it up. : P

On the right in the foreground is Sir Gyoriing, Flaer’s bff and right-hand man, and commander of the Moonland knights. He’s actually much taller than anyone else in this picture, so I made him squat so as not to tower. That weird rectangular thing is his shield. He has a massive shield. He is also a walking armoury.

In the background, short Princess Layalin is following Lady Zela around for lack of anything better to do, and also for comfort, because she is not Gyoriing’s girlfriend yet so she can’t turn to him.

In the story, two people just killed each other intentionally, so now everyone is shocked and sad because ‘what is this? We have never heard of murder! Blah.’

My new dream is to own a floor-length black velvet gown.

EDIT: Hey guyz!! I put keychains, buttons, magnets, and stickers with a round version of the Adhemlenei logo on the Zazzle site! A second version is coming as soon as I can figure out how to make it look nice!

Christmas in colour 2009 (finished!)

Christmas in Colour, 2009, finished!

(570)

And now, the finished picture! Ehhhhh… I actually used the tablet a lot less with the shading/highlighting. I used it a lot for the hair, of course, but the clothes… just didn’t work with that. I need to find a way to change the settings so the harder I press doesn’t affect the width of the stroke, but how dark/light it is.

Parts I’m pleased with: Marteth’s dark purple coat; Gullac’s teal shirt; Bayn’s grey jacket. Coincidentally, they’re the ones you can see least of. : P Tam’s jacket is a close second, though. His shoulders came out half-way decent. I’m also happy with all the hair and Flairé’s face, which was worrying me. Doesn’t he look like his parents? X D

I realize that the ink lines only get in the way now. I think I will experiment in the future with not having hard lines at all. With the tablet, I can do that now!

I’m collecting Candy-cane shards in Guild Wars so I can get the Candy-cane daggers (for Gullac, when I make him) and the Peppermint Scythe (because it’s cool). I already have a Candy-cane spear. I wonder if these weapons break if you use them too much? I don’t think so. But I’m a little nervous about actually using them in battle.

Gullac: I’m not! (sproings around like a frog, brandishing his daggers and laughing insanely)

Dude, I haven’t gotten them yet. Give me another hour.
