I drew a cyclist! This one turned out much better than Ryder’s… maybe I’d better do another one of Ryder. Can’t have too much cyclist fanart, neh? Anyway, this is Sylvain Chavanel, French cyclist and cutie. Last year, he apparently cracked his head open early in the season, and recovered in time to solo to a great victory on Stage 3 (hilly, rainy, crashy) of the TdF; took yellow, and then Stage 4 lost it because the poor guy had THREE flat tires on the cobble stage. Not as bad as Franch Schleck, but still unlucky. Then less than a week later, did another terrific solo ride up a huge mountain, and took yellow again. And then lost it the next day on an even bigger mountain because he’d spent so much energy the day before. C’est la vie, I guess. But that stage – Stage 9, if I recall correctly – had Cadel taking yellow, Andy winning the stage and being in second, and Ryder in THIRD so that was probably my favourite stage, despite Chavanel losing yellow.

This year wasn’t so successful in the TdF for him; he was wearing the French champion’s jersey, but apparently felt like quitting several times and his teammates had to really coax him to stay in. I’m glad he did, even though he wasn’t nearly as aggressive this year. It’s nice to see a familiar face, you know? And how about a face with that smile? It looks better in the original picture (Cycling News; picture taken at the team presentation). But I think my realism is improving. Although… I still have trouble with grins, y’know? In the original picture, it looks like he would make the sound ‘eh’ if he were to be speaking. But in my picture it looks more like the sound ‘ee’.

The goofy version.

P.S. Hey you guyyyyyyys here is something that nearly made me spit-take when I first saw it on TV this summer: Thor and the team!

Anyway. I picked up my printer today instead of that class that was cancelled, and it is sitting happily on my bookshelf over there. So if I need to print something, I need to take my comp over there. That’s perfectly fine; it’s actually a lot more accessible than it was on my desk. Although, here is the first thing it printed, before I remembered to change the colour cartridge:

Hmmmmm. Psychedelic Psyche?

This is why you get your fanart printed at a printshop, folks. : P

Oops, my bad. This one came before yesterday’s. But anyway, you notice the different style. This one is much more anime-flavoured, while the other one has some attempts at vague realism. Also, I failed at this one.

Man, how long has it been since I used the Fire Emblem category?

Let’s do more. : D

But wait! Secret project – and cyclists – first.

Iiiiiit’s Pent! Drawn back when I was kind of obsessing over trying to put him in Sims3. Still haven’t managed it to my satisfaction, not that I’ve done any work on that whatsoever since the Tour started.

I think I had things to say, but I have forgotten them. Well, I finished re-reading LotR, and y’know, last time, I really noticed how funny Tolkien is. He is hilarious. This time… I got a lot more of the sense of the incredible sadness… and a loooot of high language. Man. Talk about character-stripping. By the time the coronation rolls around, there are so many characters that used to have, well, character! And then they all start talking the same. And I wonder – you know, it talks about how Merry and Pippin were chilling in Minas Tirith, and then Legolas and Gimli roll up and they apparently do a lot of talking and laughing and being buddies, and I wonder – what did they talk about? It’s not important to the epic as a whole, but there’s an opportunity to see these people in ‘normal’ circumstances.

But the Scouring of the Shire is awesome. They come home, notice things aren’t right, and seize the initiative! Pippin goes all Gondor-knightly on some bully, and then Merry is like “lol, these guys have noooo clue about tactics!” and you know, they used to be ordinary hobbits, running terrified from Black Riders. Well, they’d still probably run from Black Riders. But you know what I mean. But now they have absorbed (by osmosis, you know) some of the bad@$$ery of the people they’d been travelling with, and of course hanging out with armies for months, you’re gonna learn something about tactics. So poof! they become great heroes at home as well as abroad. Get a chance to show what they’ve learned in the setting that fits them best. And I still cry at the end when Frodo goes away…

Also I’ve seen a lot of FE10 fanart recently. Maybe I should get on that, since it seems to get better, maybe, as it goes on. (But the first 13 chapters are soooo inane!!! >:O )

Muila

Getting started on my art list. This is in first pencil and then ink, because I’m going to colour it with markers. As you can see I am trying to do ‘different line weights’. It’s a new thing for me. How am I doing? And the hair is a different kind, based vaguely on the work of this artist: linky! Obviously I wasn’t actually using it as a reference but I think what I did works well in the picture. I don’t know. Anyway, Muila looks like she’s all dressed up for action. She is an action girl, you know, but she pretends not to be. She pretends really well. Often the people at the Unicornland court forget that she can kick most of their butts in time for dinner. I had fun designing the armour, too.

Colour comes later!

It’s been really windy all day! Weird. I thought it was summertime. Well, yesterday was nice and sunny! I’ve been catching up on sleep from my lack of such from last week. Now I feel like watching movies. : ) But first I will draw some more pictures. Yay!

EDIT: Well, I didn’t do any more drawing… and I’m afraid to start colouring this picture… but I did do some writing! I’m rewriting the outline of the first novel again, gathering more knowledge about The Black Unicorn and what on earth he is up to and why, because (shockingly enough) it propels the whole rest of the story. So I can’t leave that out, now, can I! Even if the readers don’t get to find out some details, right now or maybe ever, it will make the story more complete and more well structured. Also I went off on a little ramble on what my view of the Christian afterlife might be. It’s a little weird. But I doubt anyone is interested in that, so I will just add it quietly to ‘backstory and culture materials’ and you may catch glimpses of it in kalmaeirin philosophy or you may not, because it is in general applicable even though they aren’t Christian. I’m also figuring out other character motivations! Because Flaer is charming but ultimately boring, the way I’ve written him so far. Must write him better! What does he want? He wants peace and happiness for his kingdom and his parents/family. How do circumstances thwart this? D :

Hahaha, I just thought about the first time I drew Muila. It was not nearly as good as this one! Let’s hope I keep improving over the next decade!

…I keep looking at this and it doesn’t seem possible that I drew it. I just don’t draw that good! …I guess I get lucky!

“Maybe the children of a lesser god…”

This picture is inspired by “Kings and Queens” by the band 30 Seconds to Mars, and it is a most excellent song. It has a good baseline. Anyway, here’s Tseo on Hoarwilk his dragon, soaring through the clouds together. Go listen to it and look again!

Note to self – obtain the NeonDragon book about drawing humanoid characters. Also practice with the dragon character book.

This will be painted at some point! Hopefully I can do a wispy painty painting and tell you that that’s how the original looks where it is slapped on some wall at the Dragonland castle. <3

Some notes on why the picture is the way it is: all the sapient creatures in the Adhemlenei are ridden bare-back. If you think this looks uncomfortable, what with Hoarwilk’s backbonespikes, well, they deal with it. Also, you may notice that Hoarwilk has rather human-like paws, whereas Silver in the book cover does not so much. This is on purpose. Silver comes from a family that has fairly cat-like paws; Hoarwilk (who is gold, by the way) has more lizard-like toes. Also Hoarwilk has cheek fins and no head-horns.

Dragons with head-horns: Silver, Lumi (you don’t know him yet), Kirstril’s partner (I don’t know him yet!), Shlaes’ partner.

Dragons without head-horns: Craegaarhck, Hoarwilk.
